Recorded in ancient Sanskrit scripture about 3500 years ago were these words of wisdom:
‘
Upon this handful of soil our survival depends. Husband it and it will grow our food, our fuel and our shelter and surround us with beauty. Abuse it and soil will collapse and die, taking humanity with it.'.Today we need to be more passionate than ever on the urgency to take action to preserve our fertile soils. The crisis we face with the challenges of Climate Change needs more holistic trained agriculture advisers, farmers and farm leaders to help deliver the wake-up call for in the next few decades farmers globally will be faced with the challenge of how to feed nine billion people, with less of everything, less energy, less water, less resources, and less fertile soil.
To keep pace with this demand for food and fibre, farmers the world over, will need to increase production by at least 50%.
If the world runs out of oil ... we will most likely survive!
If the world runs out of gas... we will most likely survive!
but
If we run out of fertile soil ... we will certainly die!
As blunt as this may sound, time after time history tells us it is true.
O’Grady Rural focuses on encouraging farmers to rebuild soil organic carbon, creating healthier and more regenerative farming systems. By Integrating biological and softer conventional methods, farmers are encouraged away from the destructive impacts of industrial agriculture, by “making a living off the land rather than making a living from the land”.
